Do People Exploit Celebrity Deaths For Attention

The death of Prince was met with a lot of the same sort of social media grieving that the other celebrity deaths this year have. Often when a well known public figure dies, people tend to want to make a public display over their grief, taking to facebook or twitter to share how “broken up” they are about the fact that Prince just died. Others react in opposition to this trend, telling everyone how dumb they are to constantly be talking about being sad over the death of someone they never met. They even say that some are using the death of a celebrity to force other people to offer them consolation and attention.
So is it ok to be upset after a celebrity dies. Sure, if you were a huge fan of the stuff that person was making, then it makes sense that their death would be bad news. Should you be personally hurt, as though someone you knew died. No probably not, unless you did know them.
Then again, if you want to cry because you’re upset, that’s fine. Just don’t post on facebook every twenty minutes about how broken up you are over it. No one believes that you are actually that hurt that someone you never knew died. It just makes everyone think you’re clamoring for attention and recognition for how sensitive you are, as if grief was an accomplishment.
So just remember the next time a famous person dies. Before sharing how upset you are with everyone, be sure that you actually are. And maybe ask yourself, would the people who see this post actually care that I am upset about this? Because the answer is almost always going to be no. Just be smart about social media people.
So what do you think? Is it ok to post your greif for everyone to see for someone you’ve never met? Let us know in the coments.
