The Duster, a compact SUV, was first in its class. It offers a perfect blend of practicality and style. Its butch, muscular styling and the squat footprint give it a planted look, ready to tackle anything thrown at it. The Duster, with its long, plain panels and minimal detailing, has a robust look. Even though it isn’t huge, like the Mahindra Scorpio, it certainly does make up for the smaller dimensions with its masculine styling.
The space on offer is also good, with ample headroom and legroom for the passengers. The seats are comfortable, with ample support and proper cushioning. The features on offer make it a compelling package.
A combination of all these things makes the Duster a very good package. And now, Renault has decided to enhance the Duster’s appeal even more, by giving it the 4-Wheel Drive treatment.
The 4WD system is being taken from Nissan and the similarity can be seen. The same system does the job on the X-Trail. The 4WD system will use a rotary knob for commands. There are 3 selectable modes. There is the 2WD mode, where power is transmitted to the front axle only, returning good fuel economy. The second mode is the Auto mode, where the required torque is supplied to all the wheels, depending on the grip levels and requirement. The third is the conventional Lock mode, which is basically the old school 4WD system, where the torque is provided to all the wheels. This is for slushy or rocky terrain.
The Renault Duster has sensed a demand for the 4WD version of this hugely popular SUV. Though the 4WD might not outsell the 2WD, as the latter is more practical, it will certainly give the enthusiasts more options. Apart from the mechanical changes, a few cosmetic changes also seem to be on the cards, meant for the 4WD version only. It will come with a body cladding, a face lifted front end and new upholstery for the interiors might make it to the list of upgrades as well. This is being done to make the 4WD stand apart and to enhance the appeal as well. The engine on offer will be the 110 ps diesel, the top of the line 1.5 litre turbocharged unit. There will be no changes to the gearbox.
The Duster offers good ground clearance, at 205mm. However, this might not be sufficient for some serious off-roading. Hence, Renault officials are also contemplating a slight increase in the ride height.
The 4WD version of the Duster is surely going to attract attention. Many enthusiasts will be drawn towards it. Also, the easy to use All Wheel Drive system enhances the appeal further. The new Duster will be launched by October, just before Diwali, when car sales usually gather speed.
