8 Simple Ways to Lower The Risk of Breast Cancer

By: Steve Snodgrass

October is in full swing and we wish you all a Happy Breast Cancer Awareness Month from all of us here at Wably!
Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer found in women. In fact, about 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point. While this statistic is quite scary, there are preventive measures we can take as women to prevent this awful disease. By keeping these steps in mind, you can protect your body and lower the risk of getting breast cancer.
Here are eight simple ways to lower the risk of breast cancer.

Avoid taking the pill

We know that birth control pills have both risks and benefits. However, the older the woman is, the higher the risk involved with birth control pills, particularly ages 35 and up. The good news is that the risk goes away quickly once you stop taking the pill. If you’re concerned or have a family history of breast cancer, consult your doctor and have a conversation about whether or not taking the pill is the right choice for you.

Opt for breastfeeding

If possible, breastfeeding your children for at least one year can lower the risk of getting breast cancer. Not to mention all the other benefits breastfeeding offers for the child’s health.

Ditch the cigarettes

Recent studies suggest that smoking leads to a higher risk of breast cancer. So let’s add this to the top of the anti-smoking list. Smoking also increases the risk of stroke, heart disease and also aids in smelly breath, wrinkles and bad teeth. Need we say more?

Watch your weight

We know, that phrase is about as welcomed as your coworker’s nasty cough. But here’s the deal: keeping your weight in check can lower your risk of many cancers, including breast cancer. Maintaining a healthy weight is a good lifestyle goal for everyone, and a great preventive measure for lowering your risk of breast cancer.

Add 30 minutes of exercise to your daily routine

By regularly doing thirty minutes of exercise each day, you can lower your risk of getting breast cancer and keep your weight in check. Talk about killing two birds with one stone.

Limit your alcohol intake

Yes—what you’ve heard is true: alcohol in moderation can be good for the heart in older adults. However, studies show that excessive intake of alcohol can increase your risk of getting breast cancer. If you drink in moderation, keep it up. But if you’re prone to a few drinks a night, be sure to cut down on your alcohol intake in order to prevent being diagnosed with breast cancer.

Fill up on those fruits and veggies

Of course we know that eating well is the key to living a healthy lifestyle. Not to mention, consuming the right kinds of food can lower your risk of getting breast cancer. Here are some ingredients to add to your diet that lower the risk of getting breast cancer.

Avoid post-menopausal hormones

Post-menopausal hormones have been recently getting a bad rap. That’s because while they do have the ability to lower your risk of some diseases, they also can increase your risk of getting uterine and breast cancer. If you feel that you need to take a post-menopausal hormone, be sure to take it for as short a time as possible and consult your doctor regularly to monitor your health.
Breast cancer awareness is something to be taken seriously every month of the year. Remember to get a routine breast exam and be aware of your family history. While mammograms can’t prevent cancer, they have been effective in early detection and therefore saving the lives of many.
