So Renee Zellweger is in the news for having a new look. You may remember the last time that happened when it was alleged that she may have had some plastic surgery. She denied it. But how do you explain the difference between these two pictures? It’s the kind of surgery you get in Mexico after breaking out of Alcatraz.
I mean, it doesn’t even look like the same person. Why would she go to such extreme lengths to change her face? I blame you America. That’s right, you. You all had to go around constantly making lazy jokes about her being ugly. She was never ugly. Admittedly she wasn’t as attractive as a lot of other actresses of her stature but who cares? That’s a joke from family guy about how she looks like an ant eater. I suppose that’s a reference to her tendency to scrunch her lips up in some of her early movies. Before you mock her for that, consider if there’s a picture of you floating around somewhere doing duck lips. Honestly though, why is it OK for the first thing people say when she comes up “Oh she’s ugly.” For instance, here’s a yahoo answers question from 2006 that demonstrates what I’m talking about. There’s a guy on there talking about how he wants to slap her for being so ugly. He feels she needs to be slapped for making him look at her face. Would you say that about anyone else?
If she weren’t an actress would anyone go around talking about how ugly she is? If she was just some girl who worked in your office would you go around making jokes about how ugly she was? No, because you would immediately be fired. It’s not like Renee never heard people talking about her like that. I’m sure she got wind of it at some point. So how long could you really stand to constantly be told you were ugly before you took some extreme measures to change it?
Finally, she was a good actress. Why does it matter what she looks like? Does anyone care if a man is ugly as long as he’s a good actor? It’s a double standard that reveals how much we demand woman be ornaments above all else.
Now it looks like she can’t really move her face and that’s on us. So let’s all just step back and be a bit more cognizant of the fact that these celebrities are people with feelings, and we shouldn’t hold them up to a higher standard than everyone else.
